Leander Sea Scouts aim to provide equal opportunities for all young people in our local community to experience Sea Scouting. We will not discriminate on gender, religion, or disability, in line with the Scout Association's Equal Opportunities Policy.
We have a single applicant pool for all three Sections (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts) and the linked Explorer Scout Unit, accepting applicants aged 5 to 17½.
Entry to each Section occurs at the start of each term, based on the applicant's age at that time. The Group has target joining ages for each Section, but consideration is given to different ages within the core age range to maintain a balance of ages in the Section.
The Local Area is defined as within a 10-minute cycle ride from the Group HQ using a specified map. Priority is given to those living within walking and cycling distance to encourage sustainable travel.
Spaces within each Section are allocated in the following order:
- Current members moving up from a younger section
- Children of active Leaders
- Siblings of current members
- Children whose parent/carer commits to becoming a regular volunteer with the Group.
- Young person who recently moved into the area and was an active member of another Scout group.
- Applicants will then be picked at random from the subsets of the waiting pool in the following order, until all spaces are filled:
- Applicants in the Local Area and within the target age range for the space
- Applicants in the Local Area and within the core age range of the section
- Applicants outside the Local Area and within the target age range for the space
- Applicants outside the Local Area and within the core age range of the section
In exceptional cases, the Group Scout Leader may consider personal circumstances.
Ultimately, the Group Scout Leader holds the authority to admit members to the Group, and while there is no formal right of appeal, they welcome discussions with parents regarding admissions.
